Department of Public Works

The Village of Fonda Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for maintaining much of the public infrastructure, property and essential municipal services residents rely on every day.

The work of DPW can be seen throughout the Village — from maintaining streets, parks, cemeteries and public spaces to snow removal, street sanitation, street lighting, drainage, drinking-water distribution and sanitary-sewer collection. DPW employees work year-round to maintain Village property and infrastructure, respond to service needs, support community events and help keep Fonda safe, clean and well maintained.

What We Do

Streets & Roadways

DPW maintains Village-owned streets and related roadway infrastructure. Responsibilities include routine street maintenance, pavement and roadway repairs, signs, rights-of-way and other work necessary to maintain Village streets and public infrastructure.

Snow & Ice Control

DPW provides snow and ice control for Village streets and other Village areas under its responsibility. During winter weather, the Department works to plow, treat and maintain Village streets and other designated public areas to support safe travel throughout the community.

Street Sanitation & Cleaning

DPW helps keep Village streets and public areas clean through street sweeping, debris removal, seasonal cleanup and other street-sanitation activities. The Department also responds to debris and maintenance conditions affecting Village streets and public property.

Street Lighting

DPW oversees and coordinates maintenance needs involving Village street lighting and related municipal lighting infrastructure. Residents who notice a streetlight that is out, damaged or malfunctioning may report the location to the Village.

Parks & Recreational Property

DPW maintains Village-owned parks, grounds and recreational property. Responsibilities may include grounds maintenance, mowing and trimming, general park maintenance, cleanup, maintenance of Village-owned park facilities and amenities, seasonal preparation, support for community events and activities, and maintenance of public spaces. Drinking-Water Distribution

Responsibilities include maintenance and operation of water mains, distribution lines, valves, fire hydrants and service-related infrastructure under Village responsibility, along with water-main break response, leak response and distribution-system maintenance. Note: DPW maintains the distribution system. The Village Water Works treats and filters drinking water before it enters the distribution system.

Sanitary-Sewer Collection

DPW maintains the Village sanitary-sewer collection system that carries wastewater away from homes, businesses and other users toward the wastewater treatment system. Responsibilities include maintenance of Village sewer mains, collection lines, manholes and related collection-system infrastructure, along with response to collection-system problems under Village responsibility. Wastewater treatment is handled separately through the Fonda-Fultonville Joint Wastewater Treatment system.

Stormwater & Drainage

DPW maintains and supports Village stormwater and drainage infrastructure under Village responsibility. Work may include storm drains, catch basins, culverts, drainage facilities, roadside drainage, debris removal and maintenance associated with stormwater flow and Village infrastructure.

Sidewalks & Pedestrian Infrastructure

Where the Village has maintenance responsibility, DPW performs or coordinates work involving Village sidewalks, pedestrian infrastructure and other public rights-of-way.

Public Buildings & Municipal Property

DPW assists with the maintenance and upkeep of Village-owned buildings, facilities, grounds and other municipal property. This may include routine maintenance, repairs, seasonal work and other operational needs necessary to support Village government and public services.

Public Spaces & Beautification

DPW helps maintain the appearance and condition of Village-owned public spaces. Work may include mowing, trimming, cleanup, seasonal maintenance and other upkeep activities involving Village grounds and public areas.

Trees & Vegetation

DPW performs or coordinates maintenance involving trees, brush and vegetation located on Village property or within areas under Village responsibility where appropriate.

Signs & Municipal Markings

DPW installs, maintains or coordinates Village street signs, traffic-related signs and other municipal signs under Village responsibility. Where applicable, DPW also supports roadway and municipal markings associated with Village infrastructure.

Seasonal Maintenance

DPW performs seasonal work throughout the year to prepare and maintain Village property and infrastructure. This may include spring cleanup, street sweeping, mowing, grounds maintenance, fall cleanup, winter preparation, snow and ice operations, and seasonal installation and removal of Village equipment or amenities.

Emergency & After-Hours Response

DPW may be called upon to respond to urgent infrastructure and public works conditions, including water-main breaks, storm damage, fallen trees or debris affecting Village property, roadway conditions and other municipal infrastructure problems. For an immediate police, fire or medical emergency, call 911.

A Department You See Every Day

Much of the work performed by the Department of Public Works happens behind the scenes, but its impact can be seen throughout the Village every day. From the water delivered through Village mains and the streets traveled each morning to our parks, cemeteries, streetlights, drainage systems and public spaces, DPW helps maintain the infrastructure and municipal property that keeps Fonda functioning. The Department's responsibilities change with the seasons and the needs of the community, requiring employees to perform a wide range of tasks throughout the year.
