Village of Fonda – 2024 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report Summary

The Village of Fonda is committed to providing safe and reliable drinking water to all residents and customers. The 2024 report confirms that our drinking water met all State and Federal health standards, except during a summer turbidity event, which was addressed promptly and did not result in confirmed contamination.

Where Our Water Comes From

  • Our water is sourced from Briggs Run Reservoir, a surface water source that is filtered, disinfected, and treated for corrosion control before distribution.

  • Agricultural activity in the watershed presents some potential risks (e.g., pesticides, protozoa), but no contamination has occurred.

  • Our system serves approximately 1,150 residents inside and outside the village.

Water Quality & Safety

  • Water is routinely tested for a wide range of possible contaminants, including bacteria, metals, disinfection byproducts, and more.

  • All test results in 2024 were within safe limits, with one exception involving turbidity or cloudiness of water, which exceeded treatment technique standards in April, June, and July.

    • Important Note: Turbidity does not present a direct health risk alone.

    • However, elevated turbidity can interfere with disinfection, which is why a precautionary boil water notice was issued during those months.

    • The issue was resolved through operational improvements and filter optimization. A remote monitoring system is also being added to help prevent future issues.

Lead and Copper

  • 2 out of 10 tested sites exceeded the action level for lead. This was not due to the water source but from pipes or plumbing inside homes.

  • A full lead service line inventory has been completed and is available at Village Hall.

  • Residents are encouraged to flush taps and consider NSF-certified filters if concerned.

Other Notable Findings

  • Disinfection byproducts (TTHMs and HAA5) were present but remained well below regulatory limits.

  • Sodium, chloride, nitrate, and other naturally occurring minerals tested within safe ranges.

  • Odor exceeded aesthetic standards once but poses no health concern.

  • Total Organic Carbon (TOC) levels met treatment requirements, although removal efficiency is being reviewed for further improvement.

Ongoing Improvements

  • A computer interface and remote monitoring system are installed at the water plant to improve oversight and ensure early detection of potential issues.

  • The Village works closely with engineers and regulatory agencies to ensure the highest water quality.

Public Health and Special Considerations

  • Our water system continues to provide clean, reliable drinking water that meets or exceeds all rigorous state and federal safety standards, ensuring it is safe for all regular uses — including drinking, cooking, and bathing.

  • People with weakened immune systems, undergoing treatment, or with specific health concerns should speak with their doctor about additional precautions—especially during advisory periods such as boil water notices—and always follow public health guidance to reduce potential risks.

  • General information is available via the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

Water Conservation

Residents are encouraged to use water wisely to:

  • Reduce utility costs

  • Protect local water resources

  • Maintain system sustainability during dry periods

Simple conservation tips include:

  • Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth

  • Fixing household leaks

  • Running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads
