You Are Not Alone

Good morning. I have received inquiries as to what local officials are doing to protect our residents who are susceptible to abuse and neglect.

Abuse comes in different forms, physical or emotional – it is still abuse.

I have been in communication with Mike McMahon, Commissioner of Social Services, and he offers the following:

  • His department has not observed an increase in domestic violence incidents.
  • The Social Services Department continues to work with its shelter providers and are managing their current cases
  • If you have concerns for family, neighbors or friends, he would like for you to contact the:
  • New York Statewide Central Register – 800.635.1522
  • Local Law Enforcement – Emergency 911 or 518.853.5500

Report Abuse or Neglect Immediately – Get Help!

The current situation we all face as a result of the Coronavirus can cause undue stress, emotionally and financially. The distancing requirements might make a person feel alone or depressed. First let me say, you are not alone, and resources are available to you.

  • If you find yourself acting out toward others in anger or frustration get help and call 1.800.799.7233 or visit the Hotline Website
  • Stay in touch with family and friends through audio or video communication.
  • While maintaining social distancing, take a walk and get some fresh air and enjoy some of the outdoors.
  • Work on a home project or catch up on a hobby you may have.
  • Enjoy family time with activities that are inclusive of everyone.
  • Read a book – contact the Frothingham Library to see how you may borrow something you have not read.
  • Focus on the positives. Identify goals and make plans for a future trip that you have always wanted to take.
  • Filter the amount of public media you are encountering – stay informed, but do not overindulge yourself in the harmful communications we often see and hear.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. We are in this together, and I can tell you first-hand people will and are surviving illnesses caused by this virus.

Stay safe, healthy, and please, allow yourself to be Happy!

Sincerely,

Bill Peeler
